B.C. Lawyers Warned After Recent Attack Against ‘The Law Society of B.C.’
On December 29th, 2014 employees at the Law Society of BC came into work, logged onto their computers and were alarmed with a message that was sent to them from a group of hackers. The message stated that all their files have been encrypted and locked and they were advised to contact an address within 12 hours to pay an “extortion fee” to retrieve their data. If they did not pay within the 30 days, the information would be permanently deleted.
In the end, the police were informed and everything was resolved without the company paying any extortion fees. Luckily the firm took precautions and had recently backed up all of their confidential data, nothing was lost in the process.
Lawyers are advised to take extra steps in preventing cyber risk by protecting their computer systems, performing regular data back-up procedures, and purchasing insurance to protect against cyber-attacks.
